How Do You Tell If Sunglasses Are UV Protected?

1. Check for the UV400 Label

UV400 is the most widely used standard for full-spectrum UV protection. It means the lenses block all UV radiation up to 400 nanometers – covering the entire UVA and UVB spectrum.

Look for: “UV400,” “100% UV protection,” or “blocks UV400.” Be cautious with vaguer claims like “UV protection” without a specific rating. “UV380” is a lower standard that leaves the UVA range between 380-400nm unprotected.

2. Look for Certification

UV protection claims become meaningful when backed by a testing standard. Two certifications are widely recognized: CE mark (European Standard EN ISO 12312-1) and ANSI Z80.3 (American National Standards Institute). Both require UV transmittance testing and set limits on how much UV can pass through the lens.

A pair of sunglasses carrying neither mark – purchased from a market stall, airport shop or unverified online seller – has no tested UV protection regardless of what the label says.

3. Ask About the Lens Material

UV protection comes from the lens material itself or from a UV-blocking coating. Different materials have different baseline properties. Polycarbonate blocks UV up to 380-385nm and requires additional coating for full UV400 coverage. Standard glass doesn’t block UV at all without additives.

TAC (Tri-Acetate Cellulose) is a multi-layer lens material used in quality polarized sunglasses. TAC lenses combine a polarizing film between protective cellulose layers – thin, lightweight, with UV400 protection built in. It’s the lens material used across the Mr. Woodini collection.

For any lens material, ask whether the lenses are UV400 rated. This should be a simple yes or no – if the answer is unclear, treat the lenses as unprotected.

4. Use a UV Tester

UV testers are small, inexpensive devices that measure UV transmittance through a lens. A lens with genuine UV400 protection will block all or nearly all UV light. A lens with partial or no UV protection will show detectable transmittance. Opticians sometimes offer this test on-site.

5. Buy From a Reputable Source

A brand at the premium end of the market has commercial incentives to ensure their UV claims are accurate. Anonymous fast-fashion sunglasses and very cheap marketplace products don’t. The production economics of a $5 pair don’t include UV testing. Source reputation combined with visible certification is the most practical filter available.

What Are the Most Common Myths About UV Protection?

Dark lenses mean better UV protection. False. Tint and UV protection are separate. A dark lens without UV coating blocks more visible light while letting through the same UV – worse than no sunglasses for UV exposure.

Expensive sunglasses automatically have better UV protection. Not necessarily. Price reflects materials and brand positioning, not always UV certification. Verify UV400 regardless of price.
