Most people don’t know their wrist circumference – they guess, order the wrong size, and return it. A piece of string and a ruler takes thirty seconds and removes the guesswork entirely.

Why Sizing Matters for Beaded Bracelets

A bracelet that fits well looks intentional. One that’s too loose slides down toward the hand and bunches against other wrist wear. One that’s too tight sits rigid, restricts movement and looks strained. The difference between a good fit and a poor one is often just 1-2cm of bracelet length.

Unlike rings, where a mis-sized piece is clearly unwearable, a slightly off-sized bracelet is wearable but never quite right. It’s one of the most common reasons people buy a bracelet, wear it once or twice, and then stop. Getting the size right before you buy eliminates that problem entirely.

Beaded bracelets on elastic cord have some stretch built in, which gives a small margin for error. But that margin is narrower than most people assume – usually 1cm or less in practice. It’s still worth measuring accurately rather than guessing.

How to Measure Your Wrist

Measuring your wrist takes about 30 seconds and requires only a flexible measuring tape. If you don’t have one, a strip of paper and a ruler work equally well.

Method 1 – Flexible tape: Wrap the tape around your wrist at the point where you’d normally wear a bracelet, just above the wrist bone. Hold the tape snug but not tight – you should be able to fit one finger under it. Note the measurement in centimeters.

Method 2 – Paper strip: Cut or fold a strip of paper about 1cm wide. Wrap it around your wrist at the same position, mark where it overlaps, then lay it flat against a ruler to get the measurement.

Take the measurement twice to confirm. Wrist circumference is your starting point. You then add to that number based on how you want the bracelet to fit.

Fit Styles: Snug, Standard, and Relaxed

There are three common ways to wear a bracelet, and each requires a different amount of additional length added to your wrist measurement.

Snug fit: Add 1cm to your wrist measurement. The bracelet sits close to the skin with minimal movement. This works for thinner bracelets and people who find loose accessories distracting. Not recommended for bracelets worn during physical activity.

Standard fit: Add 1.5cm. This is the default for most bracelet recommendations. The bracelet sits comfortably, moves slightly with your hand but stays in position on the wrist. This is the fit most people prefer for everyday wear.

Relaxed fit: Add 2-2.5cm. The bracelet has visible movement and sits lower on the wrist. This is a style choice rather than a size error – some people prefer the casual look of a slightly looser piece, especially when stacking.

Men’s vs Women’s Sizing

Men’s wrists average between 17cm and 19cm in circumference. Women’s wrists average between 14cm and 17cm. These are population averages, not rules – individual measurements vary widely, and the right approach is always to measure rather than assume.

Bracelets labeled “men’s” or “women’s” are usually designed around these averages and may have a size range that reflects the typical market for that product. If your wrist falls outside the typical range for the label, look for a brand that offers specific measurements rather than S/M/L sizing categories.

Mr. Woodini’s range of 17cm to 22cm covers the full men’s range and the larger end of the women’s range. If you need a size below 17cm, contact the brand directly to ask about options.

Sizing When Buying as a Gift

Buying a bracelet as a gift without knowing the recipient’s wrist size is one of the more common bracelet-buying situations. Here’s how to handle it.

The safest approach is to ask, either directly or through someone close to the recipient. Most people don’t find the question strange, and it removes the guessing entirely.

If you can’t ask, use population averages as a guide. For an adult man, 19cm (standard fit) is the most common size and fits the largest number of men comfortably. For an adult woman, 17cm covers the majority of wrists. For teenagers, 17cm for boys and 16cm for girls are reasonable defaults.

Check the brand’s exchange or sizing policy before buying. A brand that makes it easy to exchange for a different size removes most of the risk from gift purchases.

Elastic vs Clasp Sizing

Elastic cord bracelets stretch when you put them on and return to their resting length when worn. This means the labeled size is the resting circumference of the bracelet, not the maximum stretch. A 19cm elastic bracelet can stretch to 22-23cm to go over the hand, then sits at 19cm on the wrist.

For elastic bracelets, size to fit your wrist at the standard fit (wrist measurement plus 1.5cm). The bracelet will stretch over your hand without issue. If the labeled size equals your wrist measurement exactly, the bracelet will feel tight during wear.

Clasp bracelets (lobster claw, toggle, magnetic) are less forgiving because there’s no stretch. The labeled length needs to match your intended wearing length. Many clasp bracelets have adjustable chains or multiple closure positions to allow some flexibility.

How Bead Size Affects Fit

Bead diameter changes how a bracelet of a given length actually sits on the wrist. Larger beads are less flexible because each bead is a rigid segment – the cord only bends at the gaps between beads. A bracelet with 10mm beads will feel stiffer and sit differently from a bracelet with 6mm beads at the same labeled length.

This matters most at the edges of your size range. If you’re between sizes, go up a size with larger beads (10mm) and stay at the lower size with smaller beads (6-8mm). The standard 8mm bead size used in most Mr. Woodini bracelets sits in the middle of this range and is generally forgiving across a 1cm measurement window.

Sizing When Stacking Multiple Bracelets

When you plan to wear multiple bracelets together, sizing each one consistently matters. If one bracelet in a stack is significantly looser than the others, it will slide and gap rather than sitting neatly alongside the others.

A good approach: size your main bracelet to your standard fit, and use the same size for all others in the stack. The combined thickness of multiple bracelets will make them sit slightly tighter than a single bracelet would, which is actually desirable in a stack – it keeps the group together and prevents individual pieces from separating.

If you prefer a relaxed stack, you can size up by 0.5cm across all pieces. The key is consistency within the stack rather than mixing fit styles.

Mr. Woodini Sizing

Mr. Woodini bracelets are available in sizes from 17cm to 22cm, in 1cm increments. All pieces are made with 8mm natural stone or wood beads on elastic cord. The stated size refers to the bracelet’s resting circumference.

Not sure which size to order? Measure your wrist circumference and add 1.5cm for a standard fit. If your measurement falls between two available sizes, round up. All Mr. Woodini orders ship internationally with gift packaging included – no additional packaging is needed if you’re buying as a gift.

Common Questions

The Skull Bracelet with Green Jade and Sandalwood (8mm) is worth considering at larger wrist sizes – the skull hardware adds definition to the piece that scales well. The green jade is a genuine stone with natural variation between beads.

Questions About Bracelet Sizing

Wrap a flexible tape measure or strip of paper around your wrist just below the wrist bone, relaxed without tension. Note the circumference in centimeters. Add 1cm for a snug fit, or 1.5-2cm for a comfortable everyday fit. That final number is your bracelet size.

L (18cm) is the most common for men, followed by XL (19cm) and XXL (20cm). If you’re between sizes, size up – a slightly looser bracelet is more comfortable and looks better on the wrist than one that’s too tight.

Contact Mr. Woodini directly with your wrist measurement. We’ll arrange an exchange for the correct size. This is why we recommend measuring before ordering rather than guessing – the right fit makes a significant difference in how the bracelet looks and feels.

Yes. Larger beads (10mm) create a stiffer bracelet that sits differently than smaller beads at the same length. If you’re at the top of your size range and choosing larger beads, size up for a more comfortable result. For 6mm beads, your standard wrist measurement works reliably.

Size up one from your regular size for stacked combinations. For two bracelets, one size up is usually enough. For three or more, consider two sizes up or mix your regular size with a size up to create natural variation in how they sit on the wrist.
